Longtime lawnmower racer Wayne DeGroff of Oswego is organizing the event to raise money for the college funds of the children of Jay Kelly. Kelly, a businessman and former Oswego County legislator, is battling an inoperable form of cancer. His children are Mallory, Molly, and Michael. “Jay sponsored me, and back in 1999 hosted a benefit for us at Kelly’s Square,” DeGroff said. “It’s my turn to help him, and I wish him lots of luck.” Along with lawnmower racing, the day’s activities will include a chicken barbecue, a 50-50 drawing, a silent auction, and entertainment by Millennium Music. The Northeast Racing Lawnmower Organization will be on hand for the race, which begins at 2 p.m. “If you want to race, you have to follow their rules,” DeGroff said. “I want to thank the speedway for letting me do this again this year. (Speedway owners) Steve Gioia and Pat Furlong are great people.” The chicken barbecue will begin at 1 p.m., and delivery will be available. Last year, DeGroff organized a lawnmower race day fund-raiser for the college fund of Skylar Wallace of Oswego. Skylar’s mother Stephanie West died of breast cancer at age 25. DeGroff no longer races lawnmowers, but serves as an owner. For the July 29 race, his son Steven DeGroff will serve as the crew chief. Wayne’s stepson Corey King will drive the #01, and Wayne Looman Jr. will drive the #1. 2007 NLMRO RULES |
